What Is Reflexology? A Beginner's Guide

Reflexology in plain language — where it came from, how a session works, what the research says, and how to get the most out of your first visit.

Reflexology is a structured pressure-point therapy applied to the feet (most commonly), hands, or ears. It's based on the principle that specific zones on the feet correspond to organs, glands, and systems throughout the body. The modern version was systematized in the early 20th century from much older Asian and Egyptian traditions.

A typical session begins with a short intake, then warm towels to clean the feet, followed by systematic pressure across every reflex zone on both feet. Tender spots can indicate areas of stress or imbalance — your therapist will spend extra time there.

Research supports reflexology for anxiety reduction, lower blood pressure, reduced PMS-related pain, and improved quality of life in chronic conditions. It's a wellness practice — a complement to (not a replacement for) medical care.

First-time guests at Ten Toes often start with a 30-minute session at $35. Wear comfortable clothing — only your feet and lower legs need to be uncovered. Plan to drink water afterward and take it easy for an hour or two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will reflexology hurt?
It's firm but comfortable. Tender reflex points may be more sensitive — we always work within your comfort range.
What should I wear?
Comfortable everyday clothes. Only your feet and lower legs need to be uncovered.
How is it different from a foot massage?
A foot massage focuses on relaxing the muscles of the foot. Reflexology applies precise pressure to mapped reflex zones connected to the whole body.
